What's the difference between an IATA and an ICAO code?ICAO codes are 4-letter International Civil Aviation Organization identifiers used in flight planning and ATC (e.g. KJFK, KTEB, EGLL). IATA codes are 3-letter International Air Transport Association identifiers used in commercial booking and consumer-facing tools (e.g. JFK, TEB, LHR). Most major airports have both; smaller GA airports often have only an ICAO code. Do private jets fly out of commercial airport terminals? No. Private jets arrive at and depart from Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) terminals — a separate private aviation facility at the airport. Major US airports have multiple FBOs (Signature, Jet Aviation, Atlantic, Million Air); the operator picks which FBO based on fuel contracts and slot allocation. Passengers don't go through TSA at the FBO — the FBO handles its own security clearance.
