Charter vs. first class

Compare private charter costs against first-class tickets for your group, with breakeven analysis so you know exactly where flying private becomes the cheaper option.

How we calculate these estimates

We built this calculator to give you an honest, realistic comparison — not a sales pitch. The numbers come from real market data, not best-case scenarios.

Charter rates reflect real market pricing. We use published hourly rates for each aircraft category (turboprop through ultra-long-range) at the booking window you select — booking weeks ahead is cheaper than same-week. A 15% buffer covers FBO, segment, and landing fees standard on charter invoices. Round trips double the flight cost.

First-class fares are based on actual domestic pricing tiers.Short hops under 1,000 miles are $400–$1,200 per person; transcontinental routes run $2,500–$6,000. These reflect what you'd actually pay on major carriers, not discounted economy comparisons.

Flight times use real aircraft performance data.We compute times using verified cruise speeds and range specs for over 100 aircraft types, with realistic climb, descent, and taxi buffers for each category. If a route exceeds an aircraft's range, we add a 45-minute fuel stop — because that's what actually happens.

The breakeven point is math, not marketing. Divide the total charter cost by the first-class per-person fare and you have the exact group size where private becomes cheaper per person than first class. For many domestic routes the crossover happens at 4–6 travelers.

What's not included: positioning fees, catering, ground transportation, or international surcharges. These vary by operator. For precise quotes, request a charter or browse our empty-leg inventory for flights already priced and ready to book.

Frequently asked questions

How many passengers do you need before private is cheaper than first class?

On most domestic routes, the breakeven happens at 4–6 travelers. Short hops under 500nm break even faster because first-class fares are still high while charter rates scale with flight hours. Long-haul transcontinental routes need a larger group because the per-hour charter cost stacks up.

Are these real charter prices?

They're market-rate estimates based on published hourly rates by aircraft category, plus a 15% buffer for FBO, segment, and landing fees. Booking window matters — same-week bookings run at a premium, while 3+ weeks out gets the base rate. For a real quote on your dates, request a charter.

What about empty leg flights?

Empty legs are one-way repositioning flights operators are flying anyway — they're often 30–70% cheaper than a quoted charter. If an empty leg matches your route and dates, it almost always beats first class on per-person cost. Browse SkyAccess to see what's available.

What's not included in these estimates?

Positioning fees (the operator's deadhead to your origin), catering, ground transportation, and international surcharges. These vary by trip and operator. The calculator gives you the order-of-magnitude comparison; a real quote tightens it up.
