Can you book an empty leg one-way? How the routing really works
What is fixed and what is flexible
Three things are set by the operator on every empty leg, and none of them are negotiable in the way a full charter is:
Departure airport. The aircraft leaves from wherever the previous charter dropped off or from the operator’s home base. If an operator ends a charter in Miami and needs the aircraft in New York, the empty leg departs from Miami. You cannot ask the operator to depart from Fort Lauderdale instead, because the aircraft is already in Miami.
Arrival airport. The aircraft lands where the operator needs it for the next assignment or for maintenance. If the destination is Teterboro, New Jersey : the primary general aviation airport serving the New York metropolitan area : then Teterboro is where the leg goes. You cannot redirect it to JFK, LaGuardia, or any other airport in the same metro.
Date and approximate departure time. The repositioning flight happens on a date tied to the operator’s charter schedule. An operator might list a departure window of several hours (for example, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on a given day), which gives some scheduling flexibility within the day. The date itself, however, is set.
What is flexible: the number of passengers on your side, what you bring, who travels with you, and to a degree the specific hour within a listed window. The whole aircraft is yours regardless of whether one person is aboard or the aircraft’s full passenger complement. You are not booking a seat; you are booking the flight.
