Jet Card

A jet card is a prepaid private jet program where members buy a fixed number of flight hours at a locked-in hourly rate and aircraft category. Empty-leg marketplaces and jet cards are competing products: cards trade liquidity for price certainty.

Also known as: jet card program, jet card membership

A jet card is a debit-card-style relationship with a private jet operator or broker. The member deposits a lump sum (typical entry points: 25, 50, or 100 hours) and receives a contractual right to fly that many hours on a defined aircraft category at a locked-in hourly rate, with a guaranteed callout window of 24–72 hours.

Jet cards solve a different problem than empty legs. Cards trade liquidity for price certainty: the member knows exactly what each trip will cost and can call on short notice without searching for inventory. Empty legs trade flexibility for price: the buyer accepts the operator's schedule in exchange for a 25–80% discount.

Mathematically, a jet card is rarely the cheapest way to fly private. The card's hourly rate prices in the operator's positioning cost on every leg, the cost of holding aircraft on standby, and the program operator's margin. Heavy users (50+ hours/year) who value the callout guarantee can justify the premium; lighter users almost always come out ahead by booking empty legs and on-demand charters as needed.

Some jet card programs also resell empty legs to their members, sometimes at a further discount and sometimes at face price. Cardholders should compare a card's empty-leg pricing against a public marketplace before assuming the card offers the best rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is a jet card cheaper than empty legs?
No. Empty legs are typically 25–80% off retail; jet cards charge a locked hourly rate that includes positioning, standby, and program margin. Cards trade higher per-hour cost for callout certainty and predictable pricing.
Are jet cards worth it?
For heavy users (50+ hours/year) who need short-notice callouts on a defined aircraft category, yes. For occasional travelers, the math usually favors booking empty legs and on-demand charters as needed.

  • Empty Leg Flight

An empty leg flight is a one-way private jet flight sold at a discount because the aircraft has to fly without passengers to its next paid booking. Empty legs are typically priced 25–80% below retail charter, with the discount widening as the departure window narrows.

  • One-Way Charter

A one-way charter is a private jet booking that flies in only one direction. Empty legs are the most common form, but operators also quote on-demand one-way charters at retail pricing when no positioning inventory matches the customer's date and route.

  • Charter Broker

A charter broker is an intermediary who arranges private jet flights between customers and certificated charter operators — Part 135 operators in the U.S., or the equivalent abroad — without operating any aircraft themselves. Brokers earn a margin on the operator's quote; marketplaces like SkyAccess remove that intermediary by surfacing operator inventory directly.
