The Gulfstream IV, a remarkable aircraft designed and built by Gulfstream Aerospace, took its first flight from Savannah International Airport on September 19, 1985. During its development phase, the IV garnered significant attention, with over 80 orders placed, marking one of the largest pre-order counts in business aviation history. After receiving certification from the Federal Aviation Administration on June 8, 1987, the Gulfstream IV officially entered service.
The Gulfstream IV family, including its derivatives, is known for its twin-jet design tailored for private and business use. The GIV began its service with serial number 1000 in 1987 and was upgraded to the IV-SP version at serial number 1214 in 1993, and the IV-SP was later designated as the G400 at serial number 1500.
The Gulfstream IV distinguished itself as the first business jet to feature an all-glass cockpit. It also underwent significant wing redesigns to enhance performance, resulting in lower cruise drag, lower root bending moment, reduced stall speed, and increased fuel capacity. The Gulfstream IV serves various high-profile missions, including NOAA's Hurricane Research Division flights for tropical cyclone observations and NASA's upper atmosphere studies. Powered by two Rolls-Royce TAY MK 611-8 turbofans, the IV uses approximately 520 gallons of fuel per hour and accommodates up to 19 passengers, though most configurations seat up to 14. The aircraft includes an internally-accessible baggage compartment capable of holding 19 suitcases.
With over 535 units produced, the Gulfstream IV remains a significant player in the business aviation market. By 2018, models from 1990 to 1992 were available for $1.6-4.4 million, while the 1992 to 1999 GIVSP models were listed for $1.25-5.2 million. The IV's legacy continues to be a testament to its innovative design and exceptional performance.
