Why repositioning volume matters

Roughly a third of private jet flights operate with no passengers aboard. Every one of those legs is an aircraft an operator must move anyway, and when it gets listed for sale it typically goes for 25 to 75 percent below a comparable charter. Two things stand out. First, the workhorse corridors are short: Las Vegas to Los Angeles, Boston to New York, Dallas to Houston. Operators shuttle aircraft between demand centers constantly, and each shuttle is a discount opportunity. Second, the list contains genuine surprises. Lincoln to Omaha, with more than 1,600 legs, out-repositions Los Angeles to New York; regional fleet logistics create empty leg supply in places no keyword tool would ever surface.

Methodology

Counts cover repositioning legs recorded on the SkyAccess marketplace over the trailing 12 months plus currently listed future flights, aggregated bidirectionally (A to B and B to A are one corridor) and folded to the metro a traveler would actually search: Teterboro counts as New York, Van Nuys as Los Angeles, Chambery absorbs Viviers-du-Lac. Corridors are only included when activity spans at least three distinct months, which excludes one-off fleet shuffles. Single-month artifacts, however large, are dropped.
